Dangers Of Drug Abuse/Misuse

A Drug is a chemical substance typically of known structure, which when administered to a living organism, produces a biological effect.

Drug abuse or substance abuse refers to the use of certain chemicals for the purpose of creating pleasurable effects on the brain.

The most commonly abused drugs include cannabis, amphetamine, codeine, cocaine, pentazocine, and heroin. Severally, it has been established by medical experts that drug abuse/misuse is dangerous to the health. A lot of people, however, do not recognize how dangerous such practices can be both to the victim and to his loved ones.

There are millions of ‘drug abusers’ around the world and the problem has been increasing at alarming rates, especially among young adults under the age of 30. In Nigeria for instance, some young people and adults within the age of 16 to 64 years abuse drugs.

Psychoactive drugs are used by people for different reasons which may include:

1. Curiosity and peer pressure, especially among school children and young adults.

2. Pain relief or cure for certain ailments (which may have turned into recreational use and become addictive.)

3. Drugs or chemical intoxicants may be used as part of religious practices or rituals as a means of obtaining creative inspiration.

Drug abuse does not only hurt the victim physically but literally harms the internal body organs with a high degree of health risks. A prolonged drug misuse can result in a fatal overdose and brain damage. Drug abuse has the tendency to compromise the victim’s job. This could be as a result of insomnia, laziness, impaired judgment, and unproductive work life.

Other consequences of drug abuse may include depression, anxiety, paranoia, hallucinations, delusions, impairing the mental health of the victim. Drug abuse can as well hurt the victim’s relationship with his family in a way that he or she can’t be trusted with money or valuables. The more a person abuses drugs, the more he becomes addicted and the consequences are reflected in many negative ways.

The financial implications for people involved in hard drugs cannot be overemphasized as they usually crash into the problem of the exorbitant cost of maintaining their drug life.

Drug abuse is dangerous, expensive and not worth it.
